1898 – Construction of Waipiata Tavern
The Waipiata Tavern began construction using mud brick. This two-level building featured accommodation for 42 people across 17 rooms, private dining rooms for the gentry, a public bar for the blokes, and a snug for the ladies.
1933 – Rebuilt After Fire
After a fire destroyed the original tavern, it was rebuilt as a single-storey dwelling. Though the railway tracks are now gone, the renamed Waipiata Country Hotel continues to welcome guests.
Modern Era – A Refurbished Icon
The Waipiata Country Hotel has been fully refurbished, offering 7 rooms accommodating up to 12 people, along with a public bar, restaurant dining area, and private dining room. Located just 50 paces from the Otago Central Rail Trail, it remains a favourite stop for cyclists.
Today – Hospitality Meets Heritage
The hotel now features a range of modern comforts, including Central Otago juices, wines, craft beers, and barista coffee. Guest areas include a dining room seating 35, a bar, a large alfresco area, and a relaxing lawn.
